The Nutrition and Physical Activity Program partnered with Harder+Company Community Research to conduct an intercept survey at food and produce distribution events facilitated by CalFresh Healthy Living funded partners across Los Angeles County. The report, Findings from the Healthy Food Access Survey: A Survey of CalFresh Healthy Living Participantspdf icon includes demographic characteristics of a sample of adults who attended food distribution events during 2021-2023 and provides a profile of the demographic characteristics, household food insecurity data, satisfaction and experiences with CalFresh Healthy Living participation, and dietary consumption. The report also includes recommendations to inform the Nutrition and Physical Activity Program.

The Nutrition and Physical Activity Program partnered with Public Health Alliance of Southern California to conduct an assessment of the food recovery and distribution system in Los Angeles County. The report, Food Recovery and Distribution in Los Angeles County: Analyzing Food Waste Prevention Opportunities to Address Food Insecurity and Climate Changepdf icon includes interviews from 14 organizations that are either currently engaged, were previously engaged in, or are interested in engaging in food recovery or distribution activities. The report outlines the current strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to the food recovery and distribution system and outlines recommendations to enhance and expand the current system.

The Nutrition and Physical Activity partnered with RAND Corporation to conduct an evaluation of a local food distribution project. The brief, Food Distribution Efforts in Los Angeles County, 2018 pdf iconincluded key informant interviews with staff from eight DPH SNAP-Ed funded agencies that were working on food distribution, as well as intercept surveys with participants across five food distribution sites. The brief provides detailed information about participants’ experience with food distribution, as well as barriers, facilitators, and recommendations for agencies that are conducting food distribution.

The CalFresh Healthy Living Share Table Implementation Guidepdf icon was developed for those who work in public schools, are interested in reducing food waste, and addressing food insecurity among low-income students by implementing share tables. This guide highlights the work of two CalFresh Healthy Living funded partners (National Health Foundation and Lawndale Elementary School District) in Los Angeles County that were successful in establishing share tables. The first case study includes a step-by-step approach for initiating, implementing, and sustaining share tables in a high school setting with the involvement and engagement of high school students. The second case study describes how a school district supported and maintained already implemented share tables in elementary and middle schools.
