Reporting a Suspected Rabid Animal -
for veterinarians
Veterinarians that
suspect an animal has rabies should:
1. Isolate the animal
from other animals and people.
2. Contact the
closest
Animal Control agency
and request a rabies test of that animal,
whether the animal bit a person or not.
3. Submit a Report.
Complete the Bite Reporting Form and fax to
Public Health at 213-481-2375. If no person
was bitten, leave the Person Bitten section
blank

4. Call our office, ask
to speak to a veterinarian. Our
main number of 213-989-7060, hours are 8:00
am-5:00 pm, Mon-Fri and we are closed on
holidays. After hours, physicians are
available for on-call to provide
consultation regarding potential rabies
exposures to humans and any other actions
that should be taken (call the County
Operator at 213-974-1234).
