Cleaning Needles
If you shoot up . . .
- You can get HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B, or hepatitis C if you share your needles or syringes with anyone who has these infections. You can't tell by looking at someone if he or she is infected. Also, if you have HIV or hepatitis, you can give the disease to anyone who shares your needles or syringes.
- Don't share. Try to get clean needles and syringes. If you live in Los Angeles County, there are places where you can get clean needles and drug treatment services.
- If you do share, always clean your needles and syringes. Clean them right before and right after you use them. Also, don't share cotton balls, cookers, or other equipment.
How to Clean Your Needles and Syringes
STEP 1 Water -- Do this 3 times.- Fill syringe to the top with clean water.
- Shake the syringe.
- Squirt out. Repeat steps 1A-1C two more times.
- Fill syringe to the top with clean, 100% bleach.
- Shake the syringe. Leave the bleach in for at least 30 seconds.
- Squirt out. Repeat steps 2A-2C two more times.
- Fill syringe to the top with clean water.
- Shake the syringe.
- Squirt out.
Repeat steps 3A-3C two more times.
