Summary: This report is designed to provide high quality and comprehensive data at the Los Angeles County level, focusing on key indicators such as health conditions, health behaviors, access to and utilization of health care services and attributes to the social and physical environment that influences health. It presents results from the 1997 Los Angeles County Health Survey and other data sources.

  The Burden of Disease in Los Angeles County

Summary: This report presents a new methodology for measuring burden of disease and injury in populations. It advances our ability to understand the burden of ill health by incorporating the contributions of premature death (measured using Years of Life Lost or YLL's) and disability (measured using Years Lived with Disability or YLD's). The analysis highlights racial/ethnic disparities and provides opportunities for targeted programs to reduce these disparities.

  Smoking and Tobacco Use Among Adults in LA County

Summary: Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death and illness in the United States. Tobacco use is a major cause of heart disease, emphysema and other respiratory diseases, and many cancers. This report presents estimates from the 1997 Los Angeles County Health Survey on smoking and tobacco use patterns among adult population in the county.

  Women's Health Status and Access to Health Care Services in LA County

Summary: Important differences exist in the patterns of illness and mortality among women compared to men, reflecting a complex array of biological, behavioral, psychosocial and economic differences between the genders. This report provides results from the 1997 Los Angeles County Health Survey on the self-reported health status of women (18+ years old) in Los Angeles County and on variation in reported health status across different subpopulations of women defined by age, race/ethnicity, socio-economic status, health insurance status and service planning areas.

  Most County Adults Support Tobacco Control Laws

Summary: Growing public awareness of the harmful effects of smoking and exposure to second hand smoke has led to an increase nationwide in policies to reduce and restrict tobacco use. In California, tobacco control policies include some of the strictest in the nation. This report presents findings from the 1997 Los Angeles County Health Survey which examined public views on tobacco control policies, the tobacco industries role in promoting smoking, and other factors that influence the use of tobacco products.
