Spotlight on the Network for a Healthy
California--Los Angeles Region Champion Moms
The Network for a Healthy California—Los Angeles
Region Champion Moms recorded a 60-second radio
promotion with Jillian Michaels, personal trainer on The
Biggest Loser and talk show host on Los Angeles radio
station KFI-AM 640. In the promotional spot, Michaels
tells listeners they “have the power to be a Champion
for Change in the fight against childhood obesity.” The
Champion Moms offer their tips for healthy change, like
serving more fruits and vegetables “to protect my
family’s health.” The recorded messages invite parents
to submit their Champions for Change tips on
www.KFI640.com for a chance to meet Jillian Michaels and
win a mini-vacation to Palm Springs, compliments of (and
paid for by) KFI-AM 640. This station also has been used
by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)

Study: Urban and Immigrant Black Men Not Meeting
Fruit and Vegetable Recommendations
Knowledge, Barriers, and Stage of Change
as Correlates of Fruit and Vegetable Consumption among
Urban and Mostly Immigrant Black Men
Daily fruit and vegetable
consumption in black men is low and has remained
relatively unchanged during the past 20 years.
Conclusions: There is a
lack of awareness of the current fruit and vegetable
recommendations. In addition, men reported fruit and
vegetable intakes that were far below national
recommendations. Greater efforts are needed to help
urban and primarily immigrant black men realize the
importance of and recommendations for fruit and
vegetable consumption.

Improving
Food Choices—Can Food Stamps Do More?
An expanded focus on nutrition may steer
food stamp participants to better diets.
To help food stamp participants make more nutritious
food choices, United States Department of Agriculture
(USDA) has expanded its investment in nutrition
education (please see, “Nutrition
Education Reaching Out to Food Stamp Participants”).
State governments and health advocates are looking at
additional modifications to the Food Stamp Program that
could reinforce nutrition education, including
restrictions on the foods allowable for purchase with
food stamp benefits and expanded benefits to buy more of
healthful foods, such as fruit and vegetables.
