African American Campaign Description
The
Network for a Healthy California--African American Campaign, funded by
the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Stamp Program,
is designed to improve the health of the low-income African American
community by providing education, advocacy, and policy development
about healthy eating and physical activity.
Through the work of the Regional Network Lead Agency and
Faith-based Community Projects, the Campaign provides services to
African Americans in Los Angeles County who are low-income.
The Campaign’s regional lead agency spearheads regional policy and
systems changes on nutrition and physical activity through their work
with media outlets, grocery stores, and decision makers. In addition,
the
Faith-based Community Projects throughout the county receive funding
to establish and expand health ministries that promote fruit and vegetable
consumption and physical activity messages through health fairs, farmers’
markets, nutrition classes, supermarkets, and the media. A formal program
evaluation has revealed that the Campaign is currently in 4 of the top 5
preferred delivery channels for the African American community (grocery stores,
mass media, festivals, and churches).
