About

The Healthy Retail Environment (HRE) Work Group is Los Angeles County’s participation in the Healthy Stores for a Healthy Community campaign, a statewide collaboration between tobacco use prevention, nutrition and alcohol prevention partners.

Goal

The goal is to improve the health of Californians through changes in community stores and to educate people how in-store product marketing influences consumption of unhealthy products. The Work Group provides capacity-building opportunities across sectors and is working to develop a cohesive approach to increase healthy retail in Los Angeles County.

Accomplishments

Healthy Retail Environemt Work Group Accomplishments
  • Created and piloted a set of standards, known as the Healthy Retail Recognition Program, that integrates the availability of nutritional foods and reduces the availability and marketing of tobacco and alcohol products.
  • Conducted focus groups and informant interviews with store owners that was used to inform the Healthy Retail Recognition Program.
  • Built capacity and fostered collaboration among workgroup members so they could execute a healthy retail environment in their respective communities.
