Acute Communicable Disease Control
Bloodborne Pathogens and Needlestick/Sharps
Safety
Health care workers can be exposed to viruses and other
microorganisms that cause bloodborne diseases. Of concern are the human
immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the hepatitis B and hepatitis C
viruses. Potential exposure can occur by needlestick or sharps injury in
the workplace. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health
(NIOSH) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are
federal agencies dedicated to prevent work-related disease and injury.
NIOSH conducts research and provides recommendations while OSHA sets
forth and enforces standards for workplace health and safety.
