The Aliso Canyon well blowout was the largest uncontrolled release from a natural gas storage facility in U.S. history, and some residents continue to report health problems. The $25 Million Aliso Canyon Disaster Health Research Study will evaluate the public health impacts of the Southern California Gas Company’s Aliso Canyon Blowout and Disaster on people living in the surrounding communities.
Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (Public Health) is coordinating the Health Research Study with guidance from a Scientific Oversight Committee (SOC) and a Community Advisory Group (CAG). Through the CAG and other opportunities, Public Health will facilitate community input on the health concerns and ideas for the Health Research Study. Public Health values community feedback throughout the Health Research Study process.
With input from the community, the Scientific Oversight Committee will help define the goals of the Health Research Study. Public Health anticipates releasing a Request for Proposals in Spring 2021 for independent researchers to bring their best and most innovative research projects forward.
