This program consists of three units: Vector-borne Disease Surveillance, Entomology and Vector Control.

The historic objectives of the Vector-borne Disease Surveillance Unit have always been the reduction of the risks of exposure to the pathogens of vector-borne disease through early detection and abatement of those factors that enhance the transmission of disease to humans. Routine surveillance of such diseases as sylvatic plague, murine (endemic) typhus, Lyme borreliosis, as well as hantaviruses and arenaviruses is conducted.

The Entomology Unit performs the taxonomic duties which identify those arthropods responsible for transmission of the etiologic agents of disease and defines the biology, life history, and the complex transmission cycles which permit the transference of these diseases to the human population.

Vector Control is responsible for rodent abatement activities and licensed animal keeper premises inspection and enforcement in most areas of Los Angeles County. The unit continues to survey and manage the rodent populations within the Los Angeles metropolitan area as part of its response to the historic Downtown Project.
